“Can I eat here?”
For most people, that’s a simple question.
For a Coeliac, it can be exhausting.
I’m Adam, and I’ve been Coeliac for many years.
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve stood in front of a cabinet full of beautiful pastries, cakes and food, only to realise there was nothing I could safely eat.
Or the times I’ve been told something was “gluten free” only to discover later that it wasn’t truly Coeliac-safe.
It’s one of the reasons Rejoice and I opened Dovetail on Overend in 2014, and later Dovetail Social in Highgate Hill.
We didn’t want to create a café with a few gluten-free options.
We wanted to create the café we wished existed for our family.
A place where a Coeliac can enjoy breakfast, lunch, coffee, donuts and dessert without feeling like the difficult person at the table.
A place where families don’t have to eat separately.
A place where grandparents can bring their Coeliac grandchild and simply say:
“Order whatever you’d like.” ❤️
That’s still what drives us today.

✨ Our team is trained in cross-contamination awareness.
✨ Every day we meet people who tell us they had no idea a café like this existed in Brisbane.

🇵🇭 Happy Philippines Independence Day.
Today, we celebrate the culture, traditions and flavours that continue to connect Filipinos around the world.
As a Filipino-Australian family business, one dish that will always have a place on our menu is our Signature Adobo Bowl - inspired by the Philippines’ national dish and made with our own Dovetail twist.
Featuring slow-cooked adobo chicken and pork, laing-style kale curry, mixed mushrooms, devilled egg and rice, it’s our way of sharing a little piece of Filipino culture with Brisbane.
Over the years, we’ve been grateful for the opportunity to introduce Filipino flavours to people from all backgrounds — whether they’re discovering adobo for the first time or enjoying a familiar taste of home.
Today, we’re celebrating the richness of Filipino culture and the communities around the world who continue to keep these traditions alive.

🇵🇭🎬 A Proud Night for Filipino-Australian Storytelling
Last Tuesday, we had the privilege of attending the preview screening of Ina and supporting the launch as a community partner.
For our non-Filipino friends, “Ina” means “mother” in Filipino- a fitting title for a story that explores family, culture, identity and the relationships that shape us.
Created by Filipino-Australian writer and director Rachel Maxine Anderson, Ina has already attracted international attention, including selection for Canneseries, one of the world’s leading television and digital series festivals.
As a Filipino-Australian family business, it was incredibly special to see a packed cinema come together to celebrate a story created with so much heart, courage and talent.
From the moving performances and thoughtful storytelling to the inspiring conversations during the Q&A, it was a reminder of how powerful it is when local creatives share their stories with the world.
We were also delighted to share some of our gluten-free donuts with guests before the screening and celebrate alongside the cast, crew, creators and supporters who helped bring this project to life.
Congratulations to Rachel Maxine Anderson, producers Rae Choi and Danielle Redford, the cast, and the entire Ina team on a wonderful launch. We are proud to have played a small part in supporting this journey.

Throwback to 2017 ❤️
It’s hard to believe this little video was filmed almost nine years ago.
When this video was filmed, Dovetail on Overend was already becoming a special gathering place for the local community- and we’ve worked hard every day to maintain the things that make Dovetail special: great coffee, delicious food, freshly baked desserts, catering for your coeliac friends and family members, and creating a place where everyone feels welcome.
Since opening our doors in 2014, we’ve watched first dates turn into marriages, young families grow up, friendships form over coffee, and countless conversations shared around these tables.
Over the years, we’ve also had the privilege of mentoring and working alongside many young staff members who have gone on to do amazing things in their careers. Some started as junior café staff and are now thriving in hospitality, healthcare, aviation and many other industries.
That’s one of the beautiful things about small businesses- they become part of people’s stories and journeys.
With May being Queensland Small Business Month, we also want to celebrate all the hardworking small businesses across Queensland continuing to show up for their communities each day, despite the challenges many are facing right now. ❤️
To everyone who has supported Dovetail over the years- whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or discovered us only recently- thank you for being part of our story.

We were proud to see Chef Rejoice at this special celebration hosted by 4EB.
Many of our customers know Chef Rejoice as the heart behind Dovetail Social, but she is also a broadcaster with 4EB, helping connect and celebrate Brisbane’s multicultural communities.

Today we celebrate the friendship between the Philippines and Australia and 80 years of diplomatic relations between our two countries.
These guten-free Mini Pavlova Doughnuts were first created by Chef Rejoice for Philippines–Australia Friendship Day in 2017, bringing together Filipino-inspired flavours and an Australian favourite in one sweet treat.

1. Bus: From the city center, you can catch the 196 or 199 bus from Adelaide Street Stop 40 (near Queen Street Mall) towards West End. Get off at the stop on Dornoch Terrace near Laura Street. Walk a short distance to reach Laura Street.
Driving/Parking:
1. From the city center, head southwest on William Jolly Bridge and take the exit toward Gladstone Road.
2. Continue onto Gladstone Road and then turn right onto Dornoch Terrace.

4. There is limited street parking available on Laura Street, so it's recommended to arrive early or consider alternative parking options nearby.
