Throwback to 2017 ❤️
It’s hard to believe this little video was filmed almost nine years ago.
When this video was filmed, Dovetail on Overend was already becoming a special gathering place for the local community- and we’ve worked hard every day to maintain the things that make Dovetail special: great coffee, delicious food, freshly baked desserts, catering for your coeliac friends and family members, and creating a place where everyone feels welcome.
Since opening our doors in 2014, we’ve watched first dates turn into marriages, young families grow up, friendships form over coffee, and countless conversations shared around these tables.
Over the years, we’ve also had the privilege of mentoring and working alongside many young staff members who have gone on to do amazing things in their careers. Some started as junior café staff and are now thriving in hospitality, healthcare, aviation and many other industries.
That’s one of the beautiful things about small businesses- they become part of people’s stories and journeys.
With May being Queensland Small Business Month, we also want to celebrate all the hardworking small businesses across Queensland continuing to show up for their communities each day, despite the challenges many are facing right now. ❤️
To everyone who has supported Dovetail over the years- whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or discovered us only recently- thank you for being part of our story.
Do you recognise anyone in this video, or remember your first visit to Dovetail on Overend? We’d love to hear your memories below ☕️✨

Today reminded us why we do what we do.
We welcomed so many beautiful families through our doors today- from breakfast through to High Tea and our hearts are so full. 💜
One moment especially stayed with us today. A mother shared that she hadn’t been able to enjoy waffles safely in six years because of coeliac disease, and seeing how emotional that moment was for her deeply moved us.
It brought us back to the very beginning — to the first apple pie we made for Adam after years of going without. As a family living with coeliac disease, moments like these remind us that it’s never just about food. It’s about feeling included again.
Thank you for spending your Mother’s Day with us and for allowing us to be part of your family moments today.

12 years of Dovetail 💜
Today we’re celebrating 12 years since it all began at our original Norman Park café.
What started as a simple love for coffee and baking has grown into something far beyond what we ever imagined- and continues both at Norman Park and here at Dovetail Social, Highgate Hill.
While each space has its own character, what we’ve always stood for hasn’t changed
A space where people feel welcome, included, and truly looked after - especially our coeliac and gluten-free community.
A place for connection- families around a table, sharing food, stories, and moments together.
And a space where we continue to share flavours and a little piece of who we are through what we create.
To everyone who has been part of the journey - from Norman Park to now - thank you 💗

Happy Birthday to the man behind the scenes (and sometimes behind the coffee machine 😉)
The calm in the chaos, the strength when things get tough, and the one who quietly holds everything together.

This Coeliac Awareness Week 🌾
I want to share something personal — where it all began for me.
One winter night back in 2010, I made an apple pie for Adam.
At that time, I wasn’t a pastry chef.
I didn’t really bake. I didn’t even cook much.
But I wanted to make something special for him.
When I served the apple pie, he started tearing up.
I honestly thought something was wrong.
Then he told me…
he hadn’t had apple pie in almost six years.
Six years.
Because as someone living with coeliac disease, something as simple as apple pie isn’t just dessert — it’s something you often have to go without.
That moment stayed with me.
It made me realise how powerful food can be.
How something so simple can bring so much joy.
And that night, I made a promise to myself —
that if I was going to bake, it would always be gluten-free.
Years later, I came across an old post I wrote when I tried making apple pie again after a long time.
I remember feeling so nervous, because that very first apple pie meant so much.
And reading it again made me realise…
that night in 2010 wasn’t just about baking.
It was the beginning of everything.
Now, with Bella also being coeliac,
this has become even more personal for our family.
And today at Dovetail Social, we see that same moment every day.
The hesitation.
The questions.
“Is it really safe?”
And then that first bite.
The relief.
The joy.
The feeling of finally being able to eat without worry.
That’s why we do what we do.
Not just to serve food,
but to create a space where everyone feels included at the table 🤍

A little moment at Dovetail ☕️
Coffee, something sweet, and a busy weekend in Highgate Hill.

Bella’s very first weekend shift at Dovetail Social 💜
Many of you may have noticed a new face behind the counter. This was her first official shift at Highgate Hill— and we couldn’t be more proud.
She stepped in, learned quickly, handled the busy moments calmly, and showed so much maturity and kindness.
Our space has always been about showing up properly — for the work, for each other, and for the people who walk through our doors. Watching her step into that responsibility was a special milestone for us as a family.
Thank you to those who encouraged her over the weekend 🤍
