🍺💪🏾 “The Final Mash” 💪🏾🍺

It’s a sad time for Brisbane craft beer and our beloved industry.

13 years ago, the beginning of the craft beer movement in Brisbane was wild. Discovering what hops in beer were was total transcendence; It was new and exciting.
Filled with optimism, incredible collabs with international icons and style exploration, along with its fair share of ego. Being an OG of an industry, you aren’t immune to being taken advantage of nor making mistakes.

Be it our generosity and trust sometimes besting our common sense, the great brand confusion of 2021 or a mid strength lager with a big cow on the can, we have certainly learned some lessons along the way.

While I’m sure all Brisbanians will have a Newstead story to share, Newstead Brewing’s story certainly isn’t singular. Where it does walk the line of uniqueness though, is in its shear grit.

3yrs ago, after a crippling pandemic that bought the industry to its knees, we flooded. The humbling of that moment sparked a massive focus on integrity and authenticity. It was do or die. So we dug deep and did!

At our core, we have always been a small family business. Built on a deep passion for pushing boundaries and exploring possibilities. With an enthusiasm to be a part of something wonderful and contribute to building a community and an industry.

We could have been forgiven for closing the doors after the floods of 2022 and the experience of watching 9 years of our hard work go under water. But something amazing happened. Those who were “meant” to show up didn’t and those who did show up, were meant to.
Brisbane reminded us of what we were a part of. One hell of a community that deserves to be fought for.

So, the family stepped back in. Scrubbed the floor of all that went before us and with nothing more than grit, we began the process of CPR on a Brisbane Icon of craft beer.

Love us or hate us, the foundation of Brisbanes craft beer scene lies within the flood stained foot holds of our tanks. We owed it to our community and ourselves to try and breathe some life into the lady, tell our true story and push harder for our beloved industry.

And push we did.

We get by with a little help from our friends, and we are immensely grateful for the support of the community and the incredible passion, dedication, skill and ownership of our sensational team.
Never have I worked with such an incredible bunch of humans. From our core team through to game day rockstars, the tapestry of our most recent story is rich with skill, an ability to innovate and produce outstanding quality under crippling conditions.

It’s been an inspiring 3 years and every single one of our team were integral to every breath Newstead took, so it’s heart breaking for us all, that in these times of industry crisis, we just couldn’t weather this final storm. The old girl is done.

We leave with our heads held high. All of our work was not for nothing. We kept the heart beating of an industry that needs help from its friends right now and we proved that passionate authenticity, heart, and sheer grit truly do make an impactful difference.

We have been proud to host your weddings, your birthdays, your reunions and your wakes. We’ve loved the rush of serving you on a Suncorp event day and having many yarns with you on a chilled out midweek afternoon. From Doggett St to Milton, it has been an honour serving you all.

If anything can be taken from Newstead Brewing’s story, it’s to remain humble, keep evolving and bettering yourselves and please support your mates.

We may be gone, but not forgotten.

You will find a little part of us in every Brisbane craft beer poured. Cheers to an industry worth fighting for!

Since before the floods,

Newstead Brewing.

🛟🍺”since before the floods”🍺🛟

Floods suck! Porter in summer doesn’t.

While we watch the unfolding news of the devastating floods hitting North QLD right now, our ptsd is triggered.

Much like Brisbane, Newstead Brewing is no stranger to a devastating flood. And much like Brisbane and what we know of North QLD, we aren’t short of a bit of resilience either.

In 1974 Brisbane was hit by a flood that you probably remember hearing your parents at housewarmings say, “did it go under in ‘74?”
It was a city altering flood. 8000 homes destroyed and 16 lives lost. It was because of this catastrophic flood, the Wivenhoe Dam was built, and flood management became a full time gig around here.

The height of those flood waters? You guessed it - 21feet and 7inches. The very name given to our first ever session able porter. A chocolaty delight that finished with such a delicious mouth feel, it left you chomping for more.

What was once considered a once in 100yr flood event, soon became a bit of a constant around Brisbane. With 2011 seeing the mud army unite and show what QLDers are really made of. 💪🏾 Then there was 2013, where our hearts were once again in our mouths (when it should have been a porter).

And then came 2022. The flood that nearly took our little brew pubs that could out of action completely. The flood that cost many businesses, right after covid and that whole fiasco, their lives.

The flood of 2022 was the catalyst for Newstead Brewing to remember who we were and are. A small family business with a passion for craft beer innovation, story telling, pushing boundaries and damn hard work.
It was the return to grass roots. Where we focus on great beer and silently put our heads down, bums up and give it one last big push.

We rebuild, or we die trying. So we felt it only fitting that our first sessionable porter, a nod to the OG, should be named after the height of the flood waters that nearly took us out. 12feet, 7inches. It’s an ode to us still standing. A big nod to Brisbanes history and a damn good summer Porter.

🍁🍺”memories mondays”🍺🍁

Liquidambar. Amber liquid. Liquid that is indeed amber.

If you are the kind to stop and smell the “ambar” and have been following us along for the 12 years we’ve graced the Brisbane craft beer scene, you have likely copped a geez of our delightful liquidambar tree on the deck of the Tasting Room in Milton.

We planted that beaut as a wee sapling 8 years ago when we opened Milton as an homage to the stunning liquidambar tree that graces the street out the front of our original home on Doggett St in Newstead.

These deciduous ornamental delights hail from North America and are commonly known as a sweet gum (cute).
Not being native to Australia, it’s possible they are a real pest and certainly a real pain if they happen to be over your gutters but gee whiz are they pretty as they change from glossy green in summer to the amber hue that floats through the breeze like the effervescence of a freshly poured pint of an amber ale. *sigh

Our Amber Ale was equally as sigh worthy back in the day, and like everything we do, we love a connection to place and time, (craft beer is basically delicious story telling after all).

So while we no longer produce this vision of the craft beer world, we do indeed make plenty of other moreish, amber toned ales to pour into your mouth holes while you sit with your doggo, under a bright sky, at the barrels wrapped around our liquidambar delight.

Suddenly I’m craving a pint.

See you Wednesday at 4pm. We’ll have one ready.

🔪🍺”it’s a thing”🔪🍺

Remember the story of the Brissie Butcher? Or maybe it’s the hoppy, bright golden ale we made?

Either way, they’re both iconic Brisbane. That’s the main thing …. 😏.

Back in the day when craft beer in Brisbane was the absolute new kid and a WC IPA set people’s hearts racing, we also adorned your mouth holes with a Golden Ale that people frothed over. A delightful pale ale with a golden colour and hoppy disposition, with one hell of a story.

Strap in for this one -
Patrick Mayne, moved to Brisbane from Ireland in 1841 at just 17yrs of age and got himself a job in a very early Brisbane as a slaughterman.
As the tale goes, good old Paddy Mayne did a little slaughtering on the side and a bloke by the name of Robert Cox turns up dead in Kangaroo Point in 1848… with a large sum of money missing.

Fast forward a year and old mate Mayne marries, opens up a shiny new butchers shop in the heart of (what is now) Brisbane City and with some savvy investing, expands his empire over the years to become one of Brisbanes wealthiest men. Of course this means he also became a politician and helped found Brisbane laws 🙄. Brilliant.

Patrick died young at only 41yrs old, leaving behind his wife and 5 children. Confessing on his death bed to the murder of old coxy, his family didn’t do too well socially and the enormous wealth really meant nothing, so his children decided to make amends to society through philanthropy.

Most notably (and personally close to our hearts) his son James used the wealth to buy 270 acres of land in St Lucia for the . This is still their main campus today and an iconic site of Brisbane.

Brisbane is full of iconic stories like this and our OG core range shared a few of them. We still continue to sharpen our axes and passionately fight to contribute to one of them… our iconic independent craft beer scene.

So sharpen your axes and get into your local independent craft beer brewery. God knows we need it.

👀🍺”monday memories”🍺👀

Remember that time we made a cider? Yep! We do 😒.

Named after a book by the joint winner of the 2004 One Book, One Brisbane competition, David Malouf (shared with female author of The Girl Most Likely, Rebecca Sparrow); “Johnno”, was regarded as one of the best known Brisbane novels ever written, it was also one of the most delicious Brisbane Ciders ever made!

Like everything we do, we put our heart, soul and (in this case) all the fresh apples Stanthorpe would give us into it.

Also like everything we do, we constantly learn and evolve and get better and better. Research and development baby!

Having our own cider 12 years ago (before everyone else did it) was a stroke of genius. Gluten free, low carb, not beer… delicious genius. Until of course one bad apple spoils the bunch.

Johnno also taught us that re-fermentation leaves a bad taste in everyone’s mouths (especially our accountant and head brewer), so we parked the bike on Cider and left it up to the cider gurus (our favourite cider is and these guys 100% know what they are doing).

Aahhh memories. Delicious, can popping memories 😒

You live to learn right? We sure do!
