Anthony Garcia, is one of the most amazing guitarist I know. We've known each other since he was in high School and since then he's gone on to do some amazing musical collaborations, (both national and international) from, classical, world music and something I know he has a deep passion for.... Jazz.. He's also a very popular and patient tutor for those serious about developing their craft, whether it be the basics or those more advanced. if you wish to know more about Monsieur Garcia, please let me know. BTW This beautiful Paul Fisher c. 1974 Classical freshly refurbed by Andre was gifted to Ant by a friend... lucky bu**er!. Anthony Garcia

I got a phone call this morning from Justin.... director of reality show "Fiance in 90 days" asking whether they could shoot a clip in the shop.... Of course I said yes indeed!.... However it seemed I was actually the subject of their production..... I have no idea about this show but it was fun so I thought it deserved a clip of it's own..... why do these things happen? I have not the slightest idea, however I would say that I'm a total w***e when someone puts a video camera in front of me and it was a lot of fun....I'll post more info when it comes my way..... thank you team Fiance

I had a call this afternoon from an old friend and bass player Michael Legg. In 1985 we felt like we "owned the road" Our band "Sitting Pretty" were playing 2 and 3 week residencies up and down the Eastern seaboard performing covers in pubs. The concept must feel alien to the internet generation, however we scraped a living doing just this. Life was a lot more simple and young folk would go out to see a band every other night. In every town there was a community of bored misfits; who ultimately became our friends and kept us employed. There was f**k all else to do back in those days. Being a musician felt special. Queensland was unique in the sense that we had "A covers circuit" or as we called my fellow travellers will know it as .... "The Hutcho Circuit" attributed to Grahame Hutchison and his monopoly on live venues in Queensland. and there were a lot..... Youngn's ...we are talking about the days of Aussie Pub Rock and we earned our stripes playing 6 nights a week for very little money, crappy dirty accom. and home seemed like a universe away with a phone call to mum and dad from a public phone once every couple of days.... These were the days of Joe Bjelka Petersen. The police didn't look fondly on freakish young musicians.... and I wouldn't trade it for the world..... To my friend Michael.... thank you for the inspiration to collate these pics for you. ###XX PS Mick,,, on the rare occasion I hear " One Night in BangKok" I'm transported back to the Grovel in Rocky.... Worst thing Andrew Lloyd Webber ever did.... just saying...

To say that Bill's ultra rare '81 P bass Special made entirely from Walnut".... with original factory active electricals has been a challenge would be an understatement...... A simple battery drainage problem turned into a pandora's box of old electricals and brittle wires blowing up in my face. It's not like you can just buy another circuit board for this bass and the anxiety has been pulpable... at least for me...... Andre had already done an amazing job refinishing and re fretting the neck. The bass plays amazingly......Big shout out to old friends, John and Joe from BJ amplifiers for resurrecting the active electronics and Rohan Staples for resource materials. Could not have done this without you......

There are many joys in my life, but one of my favourites is to corner Andre East as he's gut deep in a difficult neck extraction. I then employ my best Space odyssey 2001 "Hal": voice and ask him the obvious........ NB a neck re sets are like watching a nose job ( look it up) if your thinking..." how will this all go back together.... and yet, it does.... that's why I trust Andre above any other luthier in this fare land.... I'm a lucky fella......

Woody Guthrie is the penultimate protest singer.... Even Bob Dylan modelled his early image off Woody. This song isn't a protest song but one of praise. I'm not a Christian, but this song does rouse something within my spirit that says hope is always around the corner.... God Bless you Woody..... next week I'm going to cover a song by his Son. Arlo.....

Ronan Maclean dropped in this afternoon to pick up an old Cort acoustic passed down to him by his father. The guitar needed a lot of love and a new preamp to make it a gig worthy specimen..... Ronan started playing this song and I couldn't help myself...... this is what happened next.....Chris Isaak fans look away now! or not Ronan Maclean

This has been a week of completing big restorations, but the biggest is Steve's '28 Martin Tenor guitar which was in pieces when we received her and even those pieces were missing pieces!...... So if you like a good photo log, You'll love this. ... and thank you Steve for entrusting us with this restoration

Ros's Eko "Barracuda" is one of the weirdest and most fascinating guitars I've ever worked on.

Andre Allan East has never been a fan of the "The Bard of Barking" Billy Bragg...... to him he's a mad leftie, socialist with an annoying voice....I don't agree with the voice BTW. Trying to explain that this man is also capable of writing viscerally gut wrenching love songs is too much for his "I've put it in this box and it's staying there" brain. So this is my response with a quick preamble.....

Today was my
personal "Project" day. I've been making this T style for myself out of whatever's lying around the shop, a few Ali Express body and trem, a neck and rewound 70's Super Distortion Humbucker monster in the neck, both from Mr Fabulous pickups..... which I've tamed with cunning switching. Today's project was finding a way of mounting the Bridge pick up/.... I woke up this morning with an idea fully formed and now represents a chunk of my Sunday... but to see a picture in your head and then create it in the real is why I hope I drop dead at my bench..... When I'm by myself in my shop thinking up weird ideas; I'm not a 62/3 old fart, I'm a 17 year old experimenting in my dad's workshop....... If it weren't for a father who could weld, build a fence, fix a roof, build a monkey bar, an out of ground pool or Make a working balalaika from particle board and pine I would not be doing this...

When the inspiration comes in spades it's hard to ignore..... Happy Labour day!: and with that a song that has a lot of meaning to me. It was the one of the songs I performed at my own wedding back in '08. Played on my resonator lap steel converted from a 1968 Jason brand student guitar by Matty Bryant of Matty's Guitar Service while working with me some 20 years ago......So you could say there's a bit going on here...

I had already planned to do this song, but last night sealed it for me. On a sudden whim I went and saw a beautifully sad and ultimately inspiring Doc "It's never Over" the life of Jeff Buckley. A New Yorker who lived with a legacy and constant comparisons to a father he hardly knew. Amy Berg directed this film with Brad Pitt as the Executive producer and major research assistant. Among the many themes, It paints a picture of the torture created by one's family lineage. Combine this with a genius that only comes about once in a lifetime and it's an absolutely compelling experience. One quote from a former band mate that stayed in my head in reference to mental illness " If you don't try and fix it, it'll end up fixing you". I only wish I'd seen him perform at Festival Hall in '95...those who went said it was a religious experience... I totally believe them. I'm a pragmatist who doesn't get misty eyed about musicians taken early in their lives. I believe that Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison and even Tim Buckley were here for the time they needed to be, but somehow, Jeff Buckley's early passing feels like it robbed us before he had a chance to truly deliver his full creative vision. I hope you like this clip

Ok I'm just going to say that this is one for the serious vintage geeks and freaks....... Q. can you put nibs back on a fingerboard that has had them removed with a past re fret?.. You vintage Gibson nuts know what I'm talking about.... I always said... "no you can't" but that was before I met the Great wunderkin that is Andre East.... Here is Simon's 75 Maton AX-5 having exactly that "impossible" thing being done.... This process can add 1000's to the collectable value of a vintage Gibson and the not so little master has made this "impossible" dream come into reality...... How does he do this?... If I told you., I'd have to kill you.....

I've just come from the Junk Bar, having seen DC Cross and my old friend Andrew Tuttle perform.... I was so inspired I had to come home before the light faded and knock out my favourite Colin Hay Song, best known from the movie "The Garden State"

We Repair and restore many older instruments however at approximately 160 years old, Pat's German "Romantic" guitar is up there with the most senior. Can you recognise this piece?.... Hint... The Composer is a leftie like me..... This piece runs counter to the guitar style he's best known for and 3. It's not Hendrix......???

Bill's '81 P bass isn't just any old run of the mill P Bass, This baby is made of all walnut, right down to the finger board. Andre loves me filming him.... does it show?

I'm totally bemused when people ask me to " tag them in" and "share a post" I am have no idea how to do any of this..... honestly... and before you all start sending me "it's easy.. you just......." please save your breath.... I'll get Andre to show me...... All I know is how to upload and answer comments...... that's the god's honest truth....... Now speaking of Andre, a few posts ago I filmed Andre removing masking tape from a vintage Maton acoustic rosette.... That guitar is now packed and ready for shipment to Tom in Sydney..... But here's a clip of Andre Playing the end result... The guitar belonged to Tom's dad, Don and somewhere along the line the original sunburst finish was stripped..... in the same week the exact same model ( with original SB finish) came in for some work..... so that gave us a guide...... Tom wanted the sunburst to be a little deeper,,,,, more like that of a Gibson J45 and Andre has done amazing things. I did convince him to give the old girl a play before we packed her up..... I'm sure Tom and Don will be pleased.

The First time I met Andy MacDonald I was playing at Swizzle's night club... possibly the biggest dive in Brisbane in 1985. There was a band competition and the first band that night was the Revolution Blues Band. Andy reminded me of a young Jimmy Page. His touch and feel was mind boggling for such a young man ( we were both 21) They were by far the best band of the night and having to play a set after that performance was torture.... His tone and natural ability blew me away.... I asked him about the normal stuff guitar players ask each other.... I tried to play his guitar and realised he was using really heavy strings..... I used ( and still use 9-46). His strings felt like fencing wire and had an action so high, I was amazed anyone could play this guitar. I was purporting to be a full time Professional 21 yo musician and this guy made me want to give up right there and then..... Over the years we saw each other on and off but that night was seared into my memory. Sadly Andy passed August 2025. His body finally gave out. He left his guitars and Amps to his best friend,. fellow amazing musician, Tim Devereaux. His well beaten Takamine Arch top acoustic was a mess having had multiple "patch up:" repairs along the way. What initially appeared to be a basic bridge re glue turned into nothing short of a full structural restoration with particular emphasis that the externals remain weather beaten just as they should be.... Here Tim D plays the final outcome..... TD and I were both blown away at the power and projection this guitar has. Hope you enjoy..... We certainly did.... God Bless you Tim and God Speed Andy.

I know a lot of you love coming into my shop to see the cool stuff we're working but when I go to The British car whisperer's workshop I get the same excitement... Greg Tunstall has been looking after Penelope for 20 years now. Like some of you may have found, it's worth worth the journey if you know it'll get done right the first time.....and you get to look at all that candy!

Ronan Maclean was in the shop this afternoon as was my old Friend and gig pig Chris Amedee. These two have never met each other before but music is a universal language so this is the brilliant outcome.... Chris sent me an edited version without the f**kups but you know me.... I preferred the unedited version... especially when I make hilarious screw ups like I do in this Version of Radiohead's "High and Dry".... I had no idea what a beautiful voice Ronan has.... I hope you enjoy this as much as we did recording it. How do I actually get my work done?..... I start before 7am..... that's the secret..... When you get this type of positive energy you can get away with a lot .... including Sleep..... not that I recommend it as a long term life plan....
