Well, we managed to avoid the rain this morning to get this jarrah cocktail cabinet delivered and installed. Now I have precise measurements for the robot vacuum cabinet to the right and I’ve templated the top for the worktop and wall shelves that are going on top. The jarrah burl doors look fab. Thanks Patrick McKay for helping me carry this beast up the stairs!

Doors today. Amazing jarrah burls with a cupboard handle recess. Can’t thank Festool Australia enough for making a beast of a router that enables me to cut this profile in one very slow and controlled pass. Terrifying because there’s no option to make a mistake but we got there. Now to start the time consuming job of getting everything cut to final size and getting the gaps on these doors perfect when they’re in the cabinet.

Well, the cocktail cabinet has the kitten seal of approval I guess. 😂🤷 It is coming together nicely though, I’m pretty happy with it, that’s for sure.

Slightly less weird week today. The chopping boards are done, the tabletop is going through finish and I’m very carefully preparing to cut everything to the final size and putting the cocktail cabinet together.

It’s been a weird week. Trying to get multiple client commissions to similar points so that I’m not trying to finish something and then sand something else at the same time has meant that I’m working on everything at once. All the panels are cut and sanded for the cocktail cabinet build for Amy McKay and Patrick McKay and 100 chopping boards for Jacinta Colley 🍂 are completely done and cycling slowly through the oiling process (because it has a lid I can close to keep the dust out) while I sand the underside of a camphor and resin dining table so I can lay out the legs and then I can start the cabinet construction and all the finishing for everything else. Like I said, a weird week. The workshop is a catastrophe too, everything needs a good clean and tidy.

Today we are doing my most hated job, filling tiny holes with resin first, sanding it all off and then black CA glue for the really really tiny ones. It’s a pain but it has to be done. And on these jarrah burls, it’s very tedious. But, fine detail matters, especially as these pieces are going to be the doors on the cabinet I’m about to put together.

After the complexity of the dining table I just finished and delivered, I needed a couple of days of mindless sanding without having to exert too much brain power. Luckily I have 100 serving platters / chopping boards to do for the lovely Jacinta Colley 🍂 as corporate Christmas gifts. Instead of doing the sensible thing and batching out 20 here and 20 there, I just spent 2 days smashing them all out in one go. 😂🤷🤦 they just need branding with her company logo and finishing now.

This is the second nicest piece of furniture I’ve ever built (nothing will beat the rose gum bed) and by far and away the best table I’ve ever produced. So glad that the clients are stoked with it, it makes all the hard work worth it. A 1600mm diameter top, all solid bookmatched jarrah with cantilevered legs and brass accents. I love this table.
