From abandoned and afraid to safe and learning to trust 🐶❤️
Earlier this year, a family of 8 Labradors, including 5 puppies, were found abandoned at Kilkivan Golf Course near Gympie.

Scared, hungry and wary of people, they were too frightened to let anyone get close.

Day after day, council officers and volunteers returned with food, patience and plenty of gentle encouragement. Slowly, the dogs began to trust them, until all 8 were finally brought to safety.

Even with the community rallying to help, no owner could be found, and the reason to why they had been abandoned remains unknown.

One dog found a safe home in the community, while the other 7 Labradors came into RSPCA Queensland’s care.

Our teams got straight to work helping them prepare for a brighter future, providing veterinary care, behaviour assessments, vaccinations, desexing, microchipping and plenty of love and support.

The 5 remaining puppies have since found loving homes, while the 2 older dogs are still taking things at their own pace. With ongoing behavioural support, training and a safe, stable environment, they’re slowly building their confidence and learning that people can be kind before the search will begin to find their forever homes.

Meet Chicken… and his chicken drumstick 🐨🍗
This little orphaned koala joey came into our RSPCA Wildlife Hospital after he was found alone on the ground, possibly after taking a fall.

Thankfully, Chicken was doing well, but without his mum by his side, he needed a little extra comfort.

Enter: his very own plush chicken drumstick 🍗

After being given the all-clear, Chicken headed to a specialised wildlife carer. When he’s ready, he’ll move on to koala kindy to build his strength, socialise and learn the skills he’ll need before eventually returning to the wild 🐨🌿

Sadly, koalas are listed as endangered in Queensland – and they’re far from alone 💔

This year alone, another 34 species have been added to Australia’s threatened species list. More than 1,000 species of plants and animals in Queensland are now listed as threatened, including koalas, greater gliders, northern hairy-nosed wombats and glossy black-cockatoos.

The main threats? Habitat loss, invasive species, climate impacts and human pressures.

With today, Monday 7th September, being National Threatened Species Day, it's a reminder of just how important it is for us all to play a part in protecting our native wildlife.

How can you help? 👇

‼️ Stay alert while driving, especially at dawn and dusk when wildlife are most active

☎️ Call 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625) or your local wildlife rescue group if you find sick or injured wildlife

🚗 Keep a wildlife rescue kit in your car to safely transport small animals to a vet, where appropriate

🦘 Pouch checks can save lives – if you find an injured marsupial, always check for young

🚮 Pick up and dispose of rubbish to help prevent wildlife becoming entangled in or eating it

Meet Tank 👋
If there’s a tasty treat involved, Tank is probably already on his way! 😂

This energetic, intelligent young boy is a big fan of his people, learning new things, playing with his favourite toys and, of course, showing off his excellent snack-detecting skills.

Tank loves to learn, and food is definitely the way to his heart! Puzzle toys, enrichment games, training sessions and treat-filled activities are all fantastic ways to keep his busy brain entertained.

More than anything, Tank would love to be part of the family - joining in on adventures, enjoying some playtime or simply hanging out at home with his favourite humans.

Tank’s enthusiasm can sometimes get the better of him when life gets exciting, so a home with dog-savvy older children who can recognise when he needs a little space would help Tank feel happy and understood.

Harold’s second chance 🐶❤️
Harold came into our care after his family realised they could no longer give this big, goofy boy what he needed.

Originally purchased as a security dog, Harold quickly grew into more dog than his family was prepared for, and he eventually found himself tied to a clothesline in the backyard.

Recognising that Harold needed more than they could give him, his family made the difficult decision to surrender Harold into our care, giving him the opportunity to find a home where he could thrive.
