We recently had the opportunity to share our experiences and passions as a restaurant owner with StoryBites. Thank you Story Bites for capturing and documenting our story so beautifully.

Special thanks to my mum Kim for agreeing to be involved. I gave her 24hrs noticed that we were filming a little doco. Her story definitely connects with my story and the whole restaurant.

Please watch when you have a moment and share with your loved ones! It will make you smile and super proud!

My mother arrived with nothing but the clothes on her body
She willingly, courageously stepped on a boat while pregnant with me
To trust in the unknown
To trust in the current of the ocean
All for the love and fight for freedom for her children
Cause the truth is no one ever wants to leave their homeland
She has this quiet magical ability
To turn nothing into something beautiful and lasting
She continues to translate that feeling of home through the food she cooks for everyone who eats at Cafe O-Mai

Thinking of all the women around the world who are courageously fighting for peace, for a place to call home and freedom.

As the year comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on the small moments that shape who we are — the flavours, the people, and the memories that stay with us long after they’ve passed.

For me, that feeling always goes back to those childhood summers in the 80’s, all crammed in the back of the old Falcon with my cousins, chasing the tangy scent of green mangoes. We’d pull up under a tree heavy with fruit, still firm and bright, and scramble up the branches to pick the best ones. Although I wasn’t quite the climber, I would be directing on the ground. Our hands would be sticky with sap, our pockets full, and we’d sit on the boot with chilli and salt in one hand and mango slices in the other, laughing at nothing and everything. Those days taught me that flavours are intertwined by our environment, having a calm nervous system and being present — they are shared, simple and slow.

That’s the feeling we’ve tried to bring into the restaurant for the last 13 years.
A place where people gather, where old friends bump into each other, where stories are swapped, where flavours spark memories, and where community actually feels real and like home to so many of you.

This year brought its own challenges and its own joys, and through it all, your support kept our doors open.

As we step into our 14th year, we’re excited for what’s ahead — more yummy food , new faces, and the same commitment to warmth, generosity, and good food shared with amazing people.

See you when we get back on the 23rd Jan.

X Maggie, and Kim and our awesome team

Next week, we will be merging Red lotus into Cafe O-mai venue.

It will be the same Red Lotus menu just in the comforts and familiar space of O-mai! As the demands of sustaining a small business continue to rise, we see this as the best move forward.

There will be banh mi’s available for takeaway until 8pm!

This shot was taken about 10 years ago by captured the night ambience of diners in cafe O-mai so lovely.

Hope to see you all soon for dinner in cafe O-Mai’s space. It has been the space you have made so many wonderful memories over the last 13 years with your family and friends.

Xx Maggie, Kim and Leighton

What people say

Cafe O-Mai is a hidden gem located in the heart of Annerley, Brisbane. This pho restaurant offers an authentic Vietnamese experience with a touch of western influence in their breakfast menu. The best part about Cafe O-Mai is that they use fresh produce and do not add any MSG to their dishes, ensuring that the natural flavors are preserved. They even cater to dietary restrictions such as gluten and dairy intolerance.

Their hand-made baguettes from Patisseries Bakery & De Francs in Sunnybank Hills are a must-try, along with their lemongrass pork sausages and spring rolls made in-store. The prices at Cafe O-Mai are budget-friendly, making it accessible to everyone.

What sets Cafe O-Mai apart from other pho restaurants is that they serve pho for breakfast! In Vietnam, it's common to have steaming hot soups for breakfast, and Cafe O-Mai brings this tradition to Brisbane. So if you're looking for something different and special, head over to Cafe O-Mai on Cracknell Road Annerley for an unforgettable dining experience.
