very menu in Australia says "bao bun". In Chinese, bao already means the bun, so that's bun bun. Same crime as chai tea, which is tea tea. And naan bread, which is bread bread.

The story behind the bun is better than the grammar. Around 225 AD the strategist Zhuge Liang reached a river his army could not cross, and the local belief was that the water wanted human heads. He shaped wheat dough into heads instead, stuffed them with meat and sent those across. He called them mantou, barbarian heads. That is the legend, anyway. Scholars point out the word is a cousin of Turkish mantı and think the story came after the name.

Baozi, the filled version, only got its own word in the Song dynasty. Ours hold slow-cooked beef brisket, in a wallpapered dining room in East Brisbane, about eighteen centuries later.

What's your favourite doubled-up food word? Drop it below. 🥟

All three stories behind this beef end the same way: a tiger, in tears.

Crying Tiger, suea rong hai, comes from Isaan, Thailand’s northeast, and from Laos. Grilled rare, sliced thin, served with a jaew dipping sauce that does most of the talking.

Swipe for the three stories. Then comment 1, 2 or 3 for the one you believe.

And if you grew up with a different version, tell us. We want the one your family tells.

This is Words You Eat, ep 1: the stories hiding inside the words on our menu. New word soon.
